MAE CLARKE
Movie still of Clarke with John Boles (and a photo of Colin Clive) from the
1931 horror classic Frankenstein, signed "Thank You" during the
movie's 50th anniversary. Clarke played the wife of Dr. Henry
Frankenstein.
Photograph signed "Thank you/Mae Clarke/1981" in blue ink. With
notation in blue ink on verso in unknown hand. B/w, 9¾x7¾ overall, 9¼x7¼ image,
one surface. Shown with John Boles, who played Victor Mortiz, and a picture of
Colin Clive, who played Dr. Henry Frankenstein, in a scene from
Frankenstein (1931). Clarke, who played Elizabeth, the wife of Dr.
Frankenstein, signed this photo during the classic horror film's 50th
anniversary. Clarke (1910-1992) often played the screen victim. In 1931,
for example, she was the wife of Frankenstein (the mad doctor, at least,
not the monster), a self-sacrificing prostitute in The Front Page and
again in Waterloo Bridge, and the recipient of Jimmy Cagney's famous
grapefruit in the face in Public Enemy. She would be paired again
with Cagney, a good friend, in Lady Killer (1933) and Great Guy
(1936). Gradually reduced to supporting roles, she was still around for guest
parts on TV's Batman (1966). Lightly toned. Pen skipped while writing
signature. Errors in negative were reproduced in photo. Light creases on image
(not visible head-on). Otherwise in fine condition.
