MAE CLARKE
Reproduction of a lobby card from 1931's Frankenstein, signed "To
the lad who calls Mrs McDermott: 'MAMA!'" by Clarke in 1990
Inscribed illustration signed "To the lad who calls Mrs McDermott:/'M A
M A!'/Love/Mae Clarke/1990". Clarke also wrote "1931", the year
of Frankenstein, next to the name of the movie and added her initials
"M.C." Color, 9¾x7¾ overall, 9½x7½ iamge, one surface. Reproduction of
a lobby card for the 1931 film, Frankenstein, in which Clarke
played the mad doctor's wife. Clarke (1910-1992, born in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) often played the screen victim. For example, in
1931 - a busy year for Clarke - she was the wife of Frankenstein (the mad
doctor, at least, not the monster), a self-sacrificing prostitute in The
Front Page and again in Waterloo Bridge, and the recipient of Jimmy
Cagney's famous grapefruit in the face in Public Enemy. She would be
paired again with Cagney, a good friend, in Lady Killer (1933) and
Great Guy (1936). Gradually reduced to supporting roles, she was still
around for guest parts on TV's Batman (1966). Clarke retired to the
Motion Picture Country House in 1970. Lightly creased. "0" in "1990" is water
spotted. Light scratches on image (not visible head-on). Otherwise in fine
condition.
