In all 44 signatures. Magdalena, first performed by the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera, ran for 88 performances at New York's Ziegfeld Theatre later in 1948. Several cast members represented here, including Raitt, Sarnoff and Haas, had been featured in the West Coast production, which Dassin directed. IRRA PETINA (1903-2000), daughter of a Russian Czarist general, was a mezzo-soprano with the New York Metropolitan Opera for 18 years. Appearing in several Broadway musicals, she earned a Tony nomination as The Old Lady in Candide (1957). Baritone singer JOHN RAITT (1917-2005) came to national attention when he took over the role of Curly in the national tour of Oklahoma (1944). The following year, he debuted on Broadway as the star of Carousel.He took his stage role in The Pajama Game (1954) to the screen (1957). He didn't much like film work, however, preferring to tour in stage performances. Raitt, closely identified with standards he had made famous such as "If I Loved You" and "Hey There". He had a one-man show in the 1980s. John Raitt is the father of popular singer Bonnie Raitt. The two appeared together, and sang at each other's weddings. DOROTHY SARNOFF (1919-2008) appeared in six Broadway productions between 1942 and 1953, a mix of operas and musical comedies. The operas included Tosca and Faust. The musicals included the original production of The King and I (1951-1954). She appeared on several TV variety shows, including multiple editions of Ed Sullivan's show. HUGO HAAS (1901-1968) appeared in only three Broadway shows, but was seen often on the large screen. The Czech character actor appeared in over 60 films from 1926, and directed twenty. Many of his directing efforts, which often cast himself opposite a dangerous blonde (Cleo Moore in seven films) were commercially successful B-movies. But he made a few films with big-name stars, like King Solomon's Mines (with Deborah Kerr and Stewart Granger, 1950). JULES DASSIN (1911-2008) was an Oscar-nominated American movie director who moved overseas after being blacklisted. His 25 directing projects included films like the documentary-styled crime drama The Naked City (1948) and the film-noir classic Night and the City (1950). Dassin, who was in fact an active and unrepentant Communist, moved to France after his blacklisting. Audiences would have to wait five years after Night and the City for his next film: the French langugage Rififi, based on a novel by Auguste le Breton. The film contained a now-legendary (and often imitated) 32-minute heist scene, shot without dialogue or music. He would make another famous heist movie Topkapi, with Peter Ustinov in 1966. After falling in love and marrying Greek actress Melina Mercouri in 1966, Dassin directed Celui qui doit mourir (1957) in Greece, considered to be one of the best Greek movies ever made. Another Greek film of his, Pote tin Kyriaki (1960), earned him Academy Award nominations for Best Screenplay and Best Director. Dassin and Mercouri were also active in organizing resistance among Greek expatriates against the military junta that ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974. German-born Arthur Kay (1881-1969) was music director of four Broadway shots, including the smash hits Song of Norway (1944-1946) and Kismet (1953-1955). He appeared on screen in three films as an orchestra director, including Citizen Kane (1941), and worked in the music department on 87 films. Among these, he contributed to the score of 37 movies, mostly lesser known titles. He was, however, an un-credited orchestrator on Gone with the Wind (1939). German bass-bariton GERHARD PECHNER (1903-1969) made his opera debut in Berlin in 1933, but left his native Germany in 1933. He performed with the Metropolitan Opera from 1941 to 1953, appearing in several Wagnerian works. He had a hit record version of "Lilli Marlene" during World War II. Magdalena was his only Broadway appearance. Soprano MELVA NILES (1926-2012) made her professional debut with the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera, and then starred there in Song of Norway, earning her a supporting role in the Broadway production. Niles released three record albums, including a well-regarded collection of LDS Hymns with the CBS Orchestra. Although he came to Magdalena with musical credits which included a stint with the San Francisco Light Opera, HENRY REESE (1910-1981) would focus from the 1950s on his other career as a writer. Identified in this show bill as a staff writer for the Saturday Evening Post, Reese did indeed fill that role for 18 years (1944-1962). Under the name of John Henry Reese, he wrote over 30 Western novels between 1950 and 1980, including 10 featuring hero Jefferson Hewitt. He also wrote children's books, including the award winning Big Mutt (1952). FERDINAND HILT, who can be heard on disc from the production of Kurt Weill's Street Scene at the Hollywood Bowl, appeared in four Broadway musicals, including the major hit Can-Can (1953-1955). JOHN SCHICKLING, making his Broadway debut in Magdalena, would sing in two more Broadway hits: Out of This World (1950-1951) and Paint Your Wagon (1951-1952). His previous credits included the San Francisco Civic Light Opera, and wartime performances with Army Special Services. ARMANDO GARCIA was the youngest member of the cast of Magdalena, playing the role of Manuel at age 10. Although the show bill credits him with child roles in several films, including Anna and the King of Siam (1946), he is not listed in the credits for those films. GENE CURTSINGER trained as an engineer, but used his GI Bill credits to study music after the war. He performed with the Civic Light Operas of San Francisco and Los Angeles before making his only Broadway appearance in Magdalena. This show bill is from the collection of Francis and Violet Zane, Hawaii natives who moved to California in the 1920's. Francis Zane had a job at the historic Curran Theater and the San Francisco Opera House, which is where he began his massive collection, with photographs and materials ranging from the 1920's to 1960's. The location and luck of his occupation would land him smack dab in the middle of the celebrity world, allowing him to capture some of the most unique and interesting pieces of Hollywood - and in some cases Broadway - history.
