Magomed Tolboyev (b. 1951), a Soviet fighter pilot, became a cosmonaut in
1983. He was chief test pilot of the Buran space shuttle, the Soviet
answer to the US space shuttled. The program was canceled by Gorbachev before
ever going into orbit. Leaving the space program, Tolboyev turned to
politics, elected to the duma of the Russian Federation in 1996. In 2004,
this Hero of the Soviet Union was beaten up by Moscow police, reportedly because
they believed him to be a Chechen and a Moslem. Tolboyev declined to press
charges, stating that punishment of individual culprits would achieve nothing
without reform of the system. Edges lightly creased. Fine condition.
