MAHENDRA OF NEPAL The king of Nepal from 1955 to 1972 signed this black and white 5½x3¼ photograph of him writing on a clipboard Photograph Signed: “Mahendra Nepal”. B/w. 5½x3¼. Actual image 5¼x3 with a thin white border (one surface). Mahendra of Nepal (1920-1972) was King of Nepal from 1955 to 1972. In 1960, he led a coup that dissolved the parliament, cabinet, and constitution. He also suspended the free press and made political parties illegal. These reforms were carried out under the guise of rooting out corruption, giving power directly back to the people, and lessening the influence that the political class had. While King Mahendra's activities were controversial, his authoritarian regime passed legislation to scale infrastructure, further develop rural regions, and increase the power of local government institutions. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
