DONALD K. SLAYTON
Re: the force of gravity on the Moon.
Typed Letter Signed: "D.K. Slayton", 1p, 8x10. NASA, Houston, Texas, 1980 October 6. To Miss Christy Cooper, Longview, Washington. In full: "In regard to your interest in operating on the surface of the Moon - the Moon does have a gravity field which is one-sixth as strong as that on Earth. The people who have been there found no difficulty in moving about; in fact, it was much easier than doing equivalent work here on Earth. I think everyone, generally, enjoyed it. The zero gravity associated with being in space is similar to being in water. I hope this answers your questions and that you will continue your studies about our universe." Donald K. Slayton (1924-1993) was named as one of the Mercury astronauts in April 1959. He was originally scheduled to pilot the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission but was relieved of this assignment due to a heart condition discovered in August 1959. Slayton was restored to full flight status and certified eligible for manned space flights in March 1972. He made his only space flight as Apollo docking module pilot of the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project (ASTP) mission, July 15-24, 1975, a joint space flight culminating in the first historical meeting in space between American astronauts and Soviet cosmonauts. Lightly creased. Fine condition.
