saying he is glad he enjoyed reading Gone Are The Days and that he is
flattered and delighted to offer his autograph. Extremely rare!
Typed letter signed: "E. Alexander Powell", in black ink, 1
page, 6¾x10. January 26, 1939. Georgia. In full: "My dear Mr. Bohrer
Your most courteous letter, addressed in care of my publishers, has just
overtaken me after numerous forwardings. I am glad that you enjoyed GONE ARE THE
DAYS, for, as is perhaps evident, I enjoyed writing it. I feel highly flattered
that you should deem my autograph worthy of inclusion in your collection. Here
it is, with my very best wishes. Most sincerely yours". E. Alexander
Powell (1879-1957) was an American war correspondent during World War I,
having the unique position of being a neutral correspondent and having access
to both sides of the battle. When the United States entered the War in
1917, Powell was commissioned as a Captain in military intelligence. He was
injured later in 1918 and left the army with the rank of Major, returning
to journalism upon his return to U.S. soil. He published his war writings in
several American journals and papers before deciding to take up a career as
an adventure and travel writer, publishing some 20 plus books between 1920 and
1954. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners slightly worn.
