EDWARD V. RICKENBACKER
Edward V. Rickenbacker sends a typed letter saying that he will not
be able to answer until after the election.
Typed Letter Signed: "Eddie Rickenbacker", 1p, 7¼x10½. New
York, New York, 1964 August 28. To William Targ, G.P. Putnam's Sons, New
York, New York. In full: "I appreciate very much your writing me as
per your letter of August 25th with reference to the contents of your letter of
June 26th. To be very frank with you, I am so wrapped up in this Goldwater
campaign, with so many irrevocable commitments to speak before organizations
from one end of the country to the other - male and female, young and old - for
the next sixty days; I have not been able to get my mind on the problem and
probably will not until after Election Day. My only hope is that Senator
Goldwater will be our next president-elect on the morning of November 4th.
Nevertheless, I appreciate your continued interest. Most sincerely," Captain
Edward Vernon "Eddie" Rickenbacker (1890-1973) had joined North American
Aviation, the parent company of Eastern in 1933 and became its General Manager
in 1935, expanding its shipping and travel services. Rickenbacker
purchased Eastern in March 1938 and became its President the following
month. He remained in Chief Executive positions until his retirement in
1959. "Rick" had attained recognition as a race car driver before
commanding the famed 94th "Hat-in-the-Ring" Squadron during WWI. He downed 26
enemy aircraft, becoming America's greatest Ace and received the
Congressional Medal of Honor. After the war, Rickenbacker promoted
commercial air travel and the advancement of air power for the U.S.
military. During WWII, he was a special representative in the inspection of air
bases in the Pacific. Horizontal fold touches the top of "E" and "R". Fine
condition.
