full: "Do your work each/day as best you can--/then you will have
no/regrets." In 1881, Greely commanded the U.S. expedition to
establish an Arctic meteorological station. He established Fort Conger on
Ellesmere Island and attained the most northerly point
reached up to that time, 83°24' N (North Pole = 90° N). Greely
lost 19 of his 25 men when relief ships failed to appear (1883-1884). He was
later in charge of building and operating telegraph lines in Cuba, China, the
Philippine Islands and Alaska. Greely also oversaw relief operations in San
Francisco after the 1906 earthquake and fire. Ink slightly smudged in
