ALEXANDER SHALER
He signed this ALS the year he received the Congressional Medal of Honor for Civil War bravery at Chancellorsville.
Autograph Letter signed: "Alexander Shaler", 1p, 5x7¾. New York, 1893 January 9. To "Dear Sir", in full: "The enclosed is not a photograph of me, nor do I know whose it is. Yours truly". Alexander Shaler (1827-1911) was a regimental infantry commander in the Union Army, rising to the rank of Major General of New York Volunteers. Thirty years after his heroic efforts at the Battle of Chancellorsville , he received the Congressional Medal of Honor (November 25, 1893) for his conduct there. His citation reads: "At a most critical moment, the head of the charging column being about to be crushed by the severe fire of the enemy's artillery and infantry, he pushed forward with a supporting column, pierced the enemy's works, and turned their flank." Shaler participated in other major battles, including Antietam and Gettysburg. After the war, he served as fire commissioner of New York City (1867-1873), he was tried twice for bribery but found not guilty. Shaler was a founder and President (1875-1877) of the National Rifle Association. Fold creases, not at signature. Pencil note (unknown hand) on verso (light show-through at upper middle border).
