First Day Cover signed: "Alfred Philippi"", 6½x3½, FDC celebrating the 50th anniversary of the US Marine Corps Reserve, postmarked Washington, D.C., August 29, 1966, 5-cent stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Austrian-born German general Alfred Philippi (1903-1994) joined the German army in 1924. During World War II, he participated in the Polish campaign, held regimental command in France, and commanded the 361st Volks Grenadier Division during the Battle of the Bulge (December 1944). A recipient of the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross, he later wrote books about World War II military campaigns. Fine condition.
