ALFRED PLEASANTON. ALS: "A. Pleasanton", 2p, folded to 5x8. On his personal stationery postmarked Simon Stevens, New York, 1871 May 3. To "Dear Sir". In full: "Your note in reference to Mr. George F. Delam, is received. There is no position in Phila, to which he could be appointed but I think I shall be able to place him in New York in a short time in the Gr. Dist - if that would work - let me know. I should be glad to have the break - you speak of - & shall be in New York, Sunday & Monday on my way to Boston. Could you arrange the breakfast for Monday morning? Perhaps Delmonico, 14th Street would be better [illegible] but suit yourself. Yours, in haste." Pleasanton (1824-1897) served in the Mexican War and was brevetted 1st Lieutenant for "gallant and meritorious conduct in the battles of Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma". He was on frontier duty in the 1850s during campaigns against the Sioux and the Seminoles. He commanded the Union Cavalry Corps during the Gettysburg campaign (1863), rising to the rank of brevet Major General in 1865. After the war, he resigned from the army in a seniority dispute and occupied minor posts in the federal government until his retirement (1888). Some ink from page 2 has transferred to page 1 verso, but writing remains quite legible. Some paper separation at edges of vertical folds (¼" at top, 1" at bottom). Vertical fold crosses "P" of signature. Overall, fine condition.
