AMBROSE BURNSIDE
Autograph Letter signed as US Senator (1880), accompanied by his hand-addressed mailing envelope
Autograph Letter signed: "A. E. Burnside" as US Senator, 5 x 8. Washington, D.C. 1880 January 16. On Senate Chamber letterhead to "Mr. J. Wall", in full: "It gives me great pleasure to comply with your request." Normal mailing folds. Soiled around edges. Fine condition. Accompanied by original mailing envelope, addressed in his hand to Wall in Buffalo, New York. Soiled, worn. Ragged left edge. Good condition. Ambrose E. Burnside (1824-1881), a 1847 West Point graduate, resigned from the Army in 1852 to manufacture a breech-loading rifle of his own invention. During the American Civil War, Burnside commanded a brigade at the first Battle of Bull Run (1861), and he was briefly in command of the Army of the Potomac (1862), after having twice refused the command. He ordered the disastrous assault on Fredericksburg, Virginia in December 1862. Historian Bruce Catton called Burnside "a simple, honest soldier, doing his best," but concluded, "It was a military tragedy to give him a rank higher than colonel." Commissioned Brigadier General and Major General, Burnside resigned from the Army in 1865. Burnside was the Republican Governor of Rhode Island from 1866-1869, and he later served as a U.S. Senator from the state from 1875-1881. When the National Rifle Association was founded in 1871, Burnside became its first president. The peculiar short side-whiskers that he wore were named "sideburns" in his honor. Two items.
