Typed Letter signed: "A. J. Adams", Major General and ABMC Secretary, 1 page, 8x10. Washington, D.C., 1972 November 2. On letterhead of the American Battle Monuments Commission to Thomas Alford, Sr., Croton-on-Hudson, New York. In full: "Thank you for your letter of October 25, 1972. Enclosed as your [sic] requested is an autographed photograph for inclusion in your collection. [Item not included.] Also enclosed is a copy of the pamphlet, 'American Memorials and Overseas Military Cemeteries' which I hope will assist you in stimulating your children's interests. Sincerely". Andrew Joseph "A. J." Adams (1909-2001) graduated from West Point in 1931. During World War II, he led elements of the 7th Armored Division in the European Theater, rising to the rank of Major General and to the position of division Chief of Staff. In the postwar years he commanded the 23rd Infantry Regiment in Korea (1954-1955) and IX Corps (1962-1963), and held important staff positions, specializing in logistics. Upon his retirement (1967), Adams became chief executive and secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission. Horizontal fold crease at center - affecting signature at lower edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
