The United States Air Force officer signed this typed letter regarding future contact with James Bond film producers Albert “Cubby” Broccoli and Harry Saltzman
Typed Letter Signed: “Arno” in black ink. 7x8½. One page. Dated February 27, 1963. Sent to Mr. Charles J. Russhon. In Part: “Thanks for your kind note and Milt Caniff piece. Also I am most appreciative of your advice and help with Cubby Broccoli. I certainly hope I can get the use of a few films because the stuff over here is absolutely atrocious. Not only is it old, but it is in extremely poor condition…you mentioned Harry Saltzman, one of the producers who may get in touch with me. Tell him I will help him in any way possible”.This letter, which was sent just months after the first James Bond feature film Dr. No (1962) came out, is part of the ongoing relationship that the film's producers had with military personnel to allow for better action sequences. The recipient, Lieutenant Colonel Charles J. Russhon, acted as a technical liaison and advisor to the producers of the James Bond films, Harry Saltzman and Albert “Cubby” Broccoli. Various military-grade technologies and international shoot locations were used in later Bond films such as Thunderball (1965), From Russia With Love (1963), and Goldfinger (1964) with the U.S. military's approval. Saltzman and Broccoli produced eight Bond films, their final collaboration being The Man with the Golden Gun (1974). Major General Arno H. Luehman (1911-1989) was serving as the Commandant of the Air War College at the time he sent this letter, putting him in a position of power to help Russhon and the Hollywood producers. Before earning the position, Luehman served in WWII as the Chief of Staff of the Thirteenth Air Force. He later worked on Operation Crossroads, which included the Atomic bomb testing at Bikini Atoll.
