CARROLL W. McCOPLIN
B/w photo of McCoplin sitting in a United States Air Force uniform in front
of a United States flag. McCoplin once wore a British RAF uniform as an American
volunteer during World War II.

B/w 7¾x9¾ overall, 7½x9½ image, one surface. McColpin
(1914-2003, born in Buffalo, New York) had a 28-year military flying
career without formal training. In WWII, McColpin, an American,
volunteered for the RAF and served as a Flight Lieutenant who downed six
ME-109s in 1941. When his Eagle Squadron merged with the USAAF in 1942, he
was a Major and commanded the 4th Fighter Group's 336 Flight Squadron. In 1944
he downed (unconfirmed) three FW-190s. He served the U.S. Air Force after the
war eventually becoming Commander of the Fourth Air Force. He retired in 1968 as
Major General. Lightly toned and rippled. Corners on right side slightly
creased. Signature is faint but legible. Otherwise in fine
condition.
