MAJOR GENERAL CHARLES WELLESLEY
Letter signed with his honorific ("Douro") the year his father became Britain's Prime Minister
Autograph Letter signed: "Douro", 2 pages, 4½x7¼ with integral address leaf. London, 1828 June 20. To "Captain Chas" in Chelsea. In full: "I am very sorry I was not in London when you sent me your note about the matter which is exactly the thing I wanted. I hope to have the pleasure of finding you at Chelsea some day this week. I remain yours truly". Charles Wellesley (1808-1858) was the second son of Arthur Wellesley, the Duke of Wellington, the British military hero who had become Prime Minister on January 22, 1828, five months before this letter was written. Charles Wellesley served in the British army, rising to the rank of Major General, but his duties were primarily ceremonial: he became Chief Equerry and Clerk Marshal to Queen Victoria. He was a Conservative Member of the House of Commons (1842-1855). As a younger son, Charles did not inherit his father's ducal title, but his own sons succeeded his childless brother as the 3rd and 4th Dukes of Wellington. Sons of British nobles customarily receive honorary titles, as was the case here ("Lord Douro"). Charles Wellesley held no actual noble rank, hence his eligibility for the House of Commons. Creased and toned. Wax seal remnants on verso. Light ink smudges on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
