gall ink
Autograph sentiment signed: "I am, very respectfully,/ Your obedt.
servt./ D.H. Rucker/ Acting [illegible]/ Prvt. Maj. Genrl." in faded black
ink. 1 page, 4½x2½. Commissioned into the Army as a Second Lieutenant of
Dragoons in October 1937, Daniel Henry Rucker (1812-1910) was promoted a
few years later to First Lieutenant in 1844, to Captain in 1847, and eventually
to Major due to his gallantry at Buena Vista during the Mexican War. It was
during the Civil War that Rucker was breveted Major General in both the
Volunteer Service and the United States Army for "diligent and faithful
service"; disposed to the Quartermaster Department, he was in charge of the
procurement and distribution of wagons, horses, ambulances, mules, harnesses,
forage, and thousands of other items needed for transportation of an Army.
In 1882, after years of faithful service he was appointed Quartermaster
General of the Army with the rank of Brigadier General. Toned. Light surface
creases. Pencil notes in bottom margin in unknown hand. Irregularly cut.
