DARIUS N. COUCH. ALS: "D.N. Couch", 1p, 6½x9¼. Inlaid. Norwalk, Conn., 1882 July 8.To Major General William B. Franklin.In part: "Mr Benj Fitch said to day that he could not consent to have Fitchs House turned over to the Government unless it was to be held forever for the benefit of Soldiers...." Philanthropist BENJAMIN FITCH (1802-1883) was a noted Connecticut businessman. DARIUS NASH COUCH (1822-1897) fought in the Mexican War, the war against the Seminole Indians and the Civil War. He was a divisional commander in the battles of the Army of the Potomac in 1862 and at Fredericksburg (1862), Chancellorsville (1863) and Gettysburg (1863). General WILLIAM B. FRANKLIN served in the Mexican and Civil Wars and was held by General Burnside to be partly responsible for the defeat at Fredericksburg. Soiled and shaded, more so at lower margin which touches signature. Slightly stained. Vertical fold touches "D".
