MAJOR GENERAL DON CARLOS BUELL
A signed sepia 2½x4 carte de visite of the Civil War general in uniform
Photograph signed: "D. C. Buell/Major General". Sepia, 2½x4 carte de visite. Don Carlos Buell (1818-1898), an 1841 graduate of West Point, served with distinction in the Mexican War. When the Civil War began, Buell, a capable organizer and administrator, helped organize the Army of the Potomac. He went on to organize the Army of the Union in late 1861 and was made a Major General in March 1862, while he was engaging the Confederates in Kentucky and Tennessee. After a fierce but indecisive battle at Perryville in October 1862, Buell was criticized for his slow pursuit of the fleeing enemy, leading to an investigation by a military commission. Although no recommendations were published, Buell was dismissed as commander a year later and resigned from the Army in June 1864. After his Army service, he worked in mining and as a pension agent. Lightly worn. Slightly soiled. Bottom right corner clipped. Otherwise, fine condition.
