EDWARD O.C. ORD. Manuscript LS: "E O C Ord/B G", 1p, 5x7¾. San Francisco, Cal., 1869 June 17. To
William Baker, Auburn, New York. In full: "I was promoted to the grade
of Major Genl. of the Vols May 2nd 1862 after, and on account of the battle of
Drainsville which occurred Dec: 20 61."Major Ord's first engagement
was at Drainsville, Virginia where his 3rd brigade of Pennsylvania reserve
defeated Confederate troops under Brigadier General JEB Stuart. Drainsville was
one of Stuart's few defeats. The victory did much to raise the spirits of
the soldiers following defeats at Bull Run and Ball's Bluff. General John F.
Reynolds said at the time: "I knew if there was a fight to be scared up, Ord
would find it." On May 2, 1862, Major General Ord was transferred to a
command under General Henry W. Halleck in the Department of the Mississippi.Mounting remnant on verso with show through at left edge, two tiny mounting
stains in lower blank margin, else in fine condition.
