left the 9th Corps, I was releived (sic) from command & assigned

assigned to the 25th Corps (Colored) Army of the James. Maj. Gen Weitzel can
furnish information of them after that time." Signed as "(Late) Bvt Maj
Genl/US Vols". Verso lists the nine "Regiments Composing the/Colored
(4th) Divn, 9th Army Corps" and the eight "Members of Staff". The
9th Corps was comprised of four divisions including Ferrero's 4th Division.
After the Battle of the Weldon Railroad, August 19-21, 1864, the divisions
had become so reduced in numbers that a reorganization of the corps became
necessary. The regiments in the first division were transferred to the 2nd and
3rd divisions which were renumbered. Ferrero's colored troops were designated
as the 3rd Division. In December, Ferrero's Division was permanently detached
and most of his regiments were transferred to the newly-organized 25th Corps,
which was composed entirely of colored troops. General Ferrero, himself, was
assigned to a provisional command at Bermuda Hundred. On December 2, 1864,
he was brevetted Major General. Born in Granada, Spain, Edward Ferrero
(1831-1899) came to America with his family as an infant. Before the
Civil War, Ferrero had conducted a dancing school and also taught dancing at
West Point. Lightly creased. Stain and writing on verso shows through to
signature.
