The Medal of Honor recipient wrote and signed this Riggs National Bank check for $40.50 to A. V. Thornton in 1910, less than four months before his death
Check signed "E. A. Carr". 7¼x2¾. Sept. 10, 1910. Check no. 739, made out to A. V. Thornton for $40.50 and drawn on Carr's account at the Riggs National Bank in Washington, DC. Brigadier General Eugene A. Carr (1830-1910), born in Concord, NY, was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for gallantry at the Battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas, March 7 and 8, 1862, where he was wounded three times. After the Civil War, he became an Indian fighter and won a significant victory against Tall Bull of the Cheyenne Nation and his Dog Soldiers at the Battle of Summit Springs on July 11, 1869. He died on December 2, 1910, less than four months after writing this check. Left side is perforated. Lightly toned. Writing is lightly smeared. Normal bank stamps and cancellation holes, some of which touch signature. Otherwise, fine condition.
