GEORGE JEFFREYS (1st BARON JEFFREYS)
The British general, diarist and politician signs as simply "Jeffreys/General".
Signature: "Jeffreys/General", 4x2¼ card. George Jeffreys (1878-1960), a graduate of Eton and Sandhurst, saw combat in the Boer War (1899-1902) and was among the first British soldiers to arrive in France in 1914. Severely wounded and mentioned in dispatches 9 times, Jeffreys was one of only three officers of the 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards to survive World War I. His diaries were the primary source for Fifteen Rounds a Minute: the Grenadiers at War, August to December 1914. Rising to division command before war's end, decorated by nine foreign governments. Subsequent postings include command of the Light Division, British Army of the Rhine; General Officer Commanding London District, and command of the Southern District of India. From 1936 to his 1938 retirement he was Aide de Camp to King George VI. Jeffreys served as a Conservative M. P. (1941-1951). He was raised to the peerage as Baron Jeffreys in 1952, sitting thereafter in the House of Lords. He received many royal honors, and was generally called "Jeffreys the Lord General." His title was inherited by his grandson, his son having been killed in France in 1940. Lightly toned. Ink slightly smeared on signature. Irregularly cut. Otherwise, fine condition.
