The World War II hero, soon to be a key commander in Vietnam, signs a brief letter on his Major General's letterhead
Typed Letter signed: "George L. Mabry Jr", 1 page, 7x8½. No place, 1967 November 13. On two-star general's letterhead to Thomas L. Alford, Sr., Croton-on-Hudson, New York. In full: "Enclosed is an autographed photograph and a biographical sketch you requested. [Items not included.] Good luck to you and your children with your collection. Sincerely". Captain George L. Mabry, Jr. (1917-1990) landed on Utah Beach with the 4th Infantry Division on June 6, 1944, and was the first soldier to make his way inland to contact the American paratroopers. On November 20, 1944, he was commanding the 2nd Battalion, 8th Infantry, in an attack through the Hurtgen Forest near Schevenhutte, Germany, when he confronted the enemy. For his "superlative courage, daring, and leadership", including hand-to-hand combat, he was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Following his service in Europe he served in the Canal Zone, in Korea, and was Chief of Staff and Assistant Deputy Commanding General of the U.S. Army Forces in Vietnam (1969). He retired as Major General. Paperclip indentation at top left. Lightly soiled at top left. Slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
