GEORGE W. CULLUM. ALS: "Geo. W. Cullum", 2p, 5x8, front and verso. New York, 1890 June 20. To Alfred [illegible], Pennsylvania. In full: "I would be glad to do your friend - [illegible] Bates - a kindness, but it would be [illegible] improper in me to meddle in an official matter respecting his son's entrance to the Military Academy. The Medical Board is composed of competent surgeons, and I know it is required of it to be rigid about near-sightedness, as soldiers in the field require particularly good eyes. I am sure the Board would grant a re-examination, if convinced it had made an error. I am glad to see, by your [illegible] firm writing, that you are not an old man, though only a year behind me I work hard ten hours every day, except Sunday, seven of them at my desk. My hardest trial is in correcting proof-sheets the other three. Dear [illegible] I presume, will soon be with us. She has not told me her summer plans, but I hope to have a long visit from her and Katrina at Newport, where I shall flit very soon as the weather is growing very hot in this bake-oven of brick and mortar." George W. Cullum (1809-1892), a West Point graduate, served as Chief of Staff with the rank of Brigadier General of Volunteers to General Henry W. Halleck during the Civil War. After leaving Halleck in 1864, Cullum was Superintendent of West Point for two years. He then performed various engineering duties until his retirement in 1874 with the rank of Colonel. In 1875, Cullum married General Halleck's widow and went on to author a major compendium on the graduates of the U.S. Military Academy. Lightly creased with folds, vertical fold at the "G" of Geo. Light show through of writing. Tape remnants at upper left and right blank margins of first page. Overall, fine condition.
