GEORGE W. CULLUM
Letter of recommendation for an advisory committee on a Corps of Engineers project on the Hudson River
Autograph Letter signed: "Geo. W. Cullum", 2pages (front and verso), 5¼x8¼. New York, 1875 December 16. To General John Renton, Corps of Engineers, US Army, Army Building, New York City. In full: "This will be handed to you by my friend General J. Bailey Meyers, who traveled with me in Europe. He is a gentleman of high social standing, of marked intelligence, and has filled many important positions in this city. As a member of a committee of property owners on the line of the Hudson River improvement he will give you information on many points which may be of much importance to you in making up your mind upon doubtful questions. Yours very truly. George W. Cullum (1809-1892), a West Point graduate, served as Chief of Staff with the rank of Brigadier General of Volunteers to General Henry W. Halleck during the Civil War. After leaving Halleck in 1864, Cullum was Superintendent of West Point for two years. He then performed various engineering duties until his retirement in 1874 with the rank of Colonel. In 1875, Cullum married General Halleck's widow and went on to author a major compendium on the graduates of the U.S. Military Academy. Multiple mailing folds. Lightly toned at folds. Otherwise, fine condition.
