Manuscript Letter signed: "Geo W. Getty" as Colonel, 3rd Artillery and Brevet Brigadier General, commanding, 1 page, 7¾x10. Headquarters 3rd Artillery, Fort Hamilton, New York. To Second Auditor, US Treasury, Washington, D. C. In full: "I have the honor to forward herewith Bi-Monthly Return of Deceased Soldiers of the Regiment for November and December 1872. Very respectfully Your obedient servant". Career US Army officer George Washington Getty (1819-1901), West Point Class of 1840, was brevetted to captain for gallantry in the Battles of Contreras and Churubusco during the Mexican War. He fought in Florida during the Seminole Wars. Getty fought in most of the major battles of the Eastern Theater of the Civil War, commanding four artillery batteries at Antietam, leading a division at Fredericksburg, and wounded during the Battle of the Wilderness. Forces under his command made the breakthrough at Petersburg (April 2, 1865) which forced Confederate General Lee to abandon Richmond and then to surrender at Appomattox. Brevetted Major General at war's end, he reverted to the rank of colonel in the regular army, and took command of the 3rd Artillery on December 31, 1870. Normal mailing folds. Lightly toned. Corners lightly worn. Light surface creases. Ink notes (unknown hand) on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
