MAJOR GENERAL HARRY TAYLOR
The future Army Chief Engineer signs a check drawn on the 3rd Engineering Battalion.
Check signed: "Harry Taylor" as Captain and Company Commander, Corps of Engineers, 7½x3. Washington, D. C., 1903 September 14. Check #5, drawn on the Riggs National Bank, payable to "E. Gundersheimer" for $3.04, drawn on Company Fund "L", 3rd Battalion of Engineers. Harry Taylor (1862-1930), an 1884 West Point graduate, spent his entire military career in the Corps of Engineers. He supervised river and harbor improvements, and built fortifications, on the Northeast and Northwest coasts of the US, and in the Philippines. In 1904-1905, he was in charge of fort construction in the Philippines. During World War I, Taylor was Chief Engineer of the American Expeditionary Force, building barracks, shelters, wharves and rail lines and receiving the Distinguished Service Medal and France's Legion of Honor. Rising to Major General, he was the Army's Chief of Engineers (1924-1926), retiring in the latter year. Multiple folds. Pencil notes (unknown hand). Light surface creases. Otherwise, fine condition.
