Partly Printed DS: "H. Dearborn" as Collector, Port of Boston, 1p, 8x12¾. Boston, 1810 December 10. Also signed: "James Lovell" as Naval Officer. Certification that "the Merchandize (sic) hereafter specefied (sic), which were imported in the District of Marblehead on the Seventeenth Day of April 1810 by William Hooper in the Schooner Tom of Marblehead, H.N. Quiner Master, from Tariagona and landed in this District in the Month of October out of the Sloop Polly Robert Burridge Master, from the Port of Marblehead...have been exported hence by William Leech in the Ship Northern Liberties belonging to this Port, Shorndike Master, bound for Cape of Good Hope...." Merchandise listed: "Twenty Pipes Red wine 2409 Galls @ 23cts". The Cape of Good Hope is at the southern end of Africa at present day Cape Town, South Africa. Henry Dearborn served in the Revolutionary War and was a colonel on General George Washington's staff at Yorktown (1781). A member of Congress from 1793-1797, Dearborn was Jefferson's Secretary of War (1801-1809). He replaced Benjamin Lincoln becoming the second Collector of the Port of Boston. President Madison (Jefferson's successor) had appointed him in late 1809. He left that position to fight as a major general in the War of 1812. JAMES LOVELL was the original First Naval Officer at the Port of Boston (1789-1797). He fought in the Revolution, was a member of the Continental Congress and a receiver of taxes. Lightly creased, folds (not touching signature). Fine condition.
