In full: "I shall be much pleased to receive the copy of Genl Boyntons (sic) letters on the Battles of Chattanooga & Chickamauga kindly offered by you." Colonel Henry G. Thomas was the first regular officer to accept a colonelcy of colored troops. He commanded the 2nd Brigade at the Battle of the Crater, Petersburg campaign, July 30, 1864. Two of his three regiments, the 19th U.S. Infantry Regiment and the 23rd U.S. Infantry Regiment, were colored troops. Fine condition.
