HOWARD L. PECKHAM

The U.S. Major General pens this letter as a response to a man who was trying to know his opinion on war crimes, signed in blue ink

Autograph Letter Signed: "H.L. Peckham" in blue ink. 6x8½. One page. Place: Neubruche, Germany. Date: August 23, 1958. In full: "Dear Mr. Thompson: Your letter of July 28th was forwarded by the adjutant general in office, and it reached me yesterday. I regret that I am not sufficiently informed on the subject of the 'war crimes trials' to form an opinion on the subject. However, I am impressed by the list of those who have contributed their views, and I wish you success in your project. Cordially yours, H.L. Peckham, Maj. Gen. U.S.A. Retired". Howard Louis Peckham (1897-1972) served for twenty years in the U.S. Army after graduating from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. While serving concurrently as a member of the Army-Navy Petroleum Board, he testified before Congress about army petroleum needs, and for his meritorious work of procuring fuels and allocating them to the U.S. armed forces worldwide, he was awarded a Distinguished Service Medal. In postwar Paris, he headed the American Graves Registration Command and after returning to the United States, he served in highly responsible positions until his army retirement as a U.S. Major General in 1956. As a civilian, his patriotism continued when he worked for the Free Europe Committee and traveled abroad to meet with Western European diplomats and he ensured more security for the United States. He was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War II.  Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
