JACOB COX. Autograph Letter signed: "J. D. Cox", 1p, 4¾x7¾. Cincinnati, Ohio, 1871 March 23. To Generals M.F. Force and L. E. [2nd name illegible]. In full: "Permit me to express my hearty acknowledgement of the honor done me by the Society of the Army of the Tennessee in inviting me to be present at the coming reunion, and to say that I am most happy in accepting the invitation. Very truly yours". An abolitionist and founding member of Ohio's Republican Party, Jacob Dolson COX (1828-1900) became a brigadier general of U.S. volunteers early in the Civil War. He commanded a division at South Mountain and Sharpsburg (1862), commanded the military district of Ohio (1863), and then returned to divisional command in the Atlanta campaign. He served one term as Governor of Ohio (1866-1867), failing to secure re-nomination because of his support for President Andrew Johnson's Reconstruction policies. He was appointed Secretary of the Interior by President Grant (1869-1870), but resigned in protest over the administration's failure to promote civil service reform. He was elected in 1876 to one term in Congress, and later served as president of the University of Cincinnati. He wrote prolifically and controversially about the Civil War. Cox had much in common with addressee Manning Ferguson FORCE (1824-1899). Both led Ohio volunteers at the beginning of the Civil War, saw active and distinguished service through the conflict, retired as Major Generals, and pursued political careers in Ohio afterwards. (Force was an elected state judge and a Congressional candidate.) Slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
