GENERAL JAMES S. NEGLEY
His rare signature on a long slip of paper
Signature: "Jas. S. Negley/Pittsburgh Pa", 7¾x3, trimmed unevenly at top edge. James Scott Negley (1826-1901) served in the US Army during the Mexican War and as a brigade commander in the Union Army in the Civil War. Negley contributed to the Union victories at Chattanooga, Murfreesboro and Stone's River, but was relieved of command after the Union defeat at Chickamauga (1863). An inquiry exonorated Negley, and General Grant offered to re-instate him in command, but he resigned his commission instead. A Republican from Pennsylvania, he served in the US Congress (1869-1875, 1885-1887), and was later President of several railroads. Left edge ragged from previous binding. Right edge lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
