JOE ENGLE and TED MENDENHALL
As crew members on an early flight test for the space shuttle, both sign a commemorative cover.
Commemorative Cover signed: "Joe Engle", "Ted Mendenhall", 6½x3½. Ink stamp cachet notes the shuttle flight landing test at the Dryden Flight Research Center, using a modified Gulfstream II aircraft, with a crew consisting of Fullerton and Mendenhall. Postmarked Edwards, California, July 7, 1977, imprinted with 13-cent Liberty Tree stamp. Joe ENGLE (b. 1932) became a NASA astronaut in 1966, tested the X-15, flew the STS-2, STS-51-I and was a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. Over the course of his career he flew more than 155 types of aircraft. Engle is the only human being to have flown two different types of winged vehicles in space (X-15 & Space Shuttle) and was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2001. On March 12, 1981, Engle and Richard Truly flew the second test mission of the first space shuttle, Columbia, thus becoming the first crew of a previously used space vehicle. Edward D. "Ted" MENDENHALL, an employee of Gulfstream Aerospace Corp., specialized in safety and certification of jet aircraft. Fading and slight bleeding of ink from Stamp (not affecting signatures). Slightly worn at corners. Otherwise, fine condition.
