Commemorative Envelope signed: "Joe Engle", "Richard Truly", 6½x3½. Cachet honors the a test flight of the space shuttle "Enterprise," with Truly and Engle as crew, postmarked Edwards, California, October 12, 1977, embossed 13-cent Liberty Tree stamp. RICHARD H. TRULY (born 1937) was among the first military astronauts selected in 1965 and became a NASA astronaut in 1969. In 1983, he served as commander of STS-8, successfully completing the first night launch and landing. Retired Vice Admiral Truly served as the eighth Administrator of NASA (1989-1992) and was the first former astronaut to do so. JOE H. ENGLE (born 1932) became a NASA astronaut in 1966, tested the X-15, flew the STS-2, STS-51-I and was a member of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots. Over the course of his career he flew more than 155 types of aircraft. Engle is the only human being to have flown two different types of winged vehicles in space (X-15 & Space Shuttle) and was inducted into the Astronaut Hall of Fame in 2001.
