GENERAL JOHN ADAMS DIX
War-dated letter penned during the American Civil War in 1863. In it, he acknowledges the receipt of a note. Dix was commander of the Union's Department of the East when he wrote this letter. Just three months before the war, he sent this famous order to an American cutter: "If any man attempts to haul down the American Flag, shoot him on the spot".
Autograph letter signed "John A. Dix/Maj. Genl.". 1 page, 5¼x8. New York, Dec. 21, 1863.In full: "Dear Sir: I have had the pleasure of receiving your note." At the time of this letter, Dix (1798-1879) was the commander of the Department of the East (1863-1865) during the American Civil War. Earlier that year, he had been the commander of the Department of Virginia (1862-1863). As President James Buchanan's Secretary of the Treasury (1861), Dix (1798-1879) telegraphed this famous order to the American cutter Robert McClelland in the port of New Orleans on Jan. 29, 1861, less than three months before the start of the American Civil War: "If any man attempts to haul down the American Flag, shoot him on the spot". After the Civil War, Dix, who had been a U. S. Senator from New York (1845-1849), was U.S. Minister to France (1866-1869) and Governor of New York (1872-1874). The U.S. Army's Fort Dix in New Jersey is named in his honor. Lightly creased with folds, not at signature. Lightly shaded at perimeter, light blue stains at left margin, touching 1 letter of writing. Nicked at upper blank edge, ¼-inch tear at upper right blank edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
