Check signed "A.C. Flagg", "Greene C. Bronson", "A. Keyser" and "John A. Dix" as commissioners of the Erie Canal Fund. Unknownendorsement on verso. Black and brown ink notations in unknown hand.6¾x5¼. May 5, 1834. Check no. 77 for $2,500.0, drawn from the Mechanics' and Farmers' Bank and payable in cash to H. Bartow, cashier. Memo line: "for Jub1l Livermore Superintendent of Repairs". Together, the commissioners signing here were responsible for reducing tolls on the Erie Canal, a move which paid off in increased traffic and increased revenues as well. The Erie Canal, opened in 1825, linked the Hudson River at Albany to Lake Erie at Buffalo, contributing greatly to the settlement of western New York State and linking the farms of the Middle West to markets in the East and in Europe. Dix served as a Commissioner of the Canal Fund from 1833 to 1838, Flagg from 1826 to 1832, 1834 to 1838 and 1842 to 1847, Bronson from 1829 to 1835 and Keyser in 1824 and from 1826 to 1837. As President James Buchanan's Secretary of the Treasury (1861), JOHN ADAMS DIX (1798-1879) telegraphed this famous order to the American cutter Robert McClelland in the port of New Orleans on Jan. 29, 1861, less than three months before the start of the American Civil War: "If any man attempts to haul down the American Flag, shoot him on the spot". Dix later commanded the Department of Virginia (1862-1863) and the Department of the East (1863-1865). After the Civil War, he was Minister to France (1866-1869) and Governor of New York (1872-1874). The U. S. Army's Fort Dix in New Jersey is named in his honor. Dix was also a New York politician and a member of the state's Canal Commission. AZARIAH C. FLAGG (1790-1873) was also the Comptroller of the Erie Canal as well as New York State secretary of state (1826-1832) and comptroller (1834-1839, 1842-1846). ABRAHAM KEYSER, JR. (1784-1873), was New York State Treasurer (1824-1825 and 1826-1838). GREENE C. BRONSON (1789-1863) was New York State attorney general (1829-1836), Chief Judge of the New York Court of Appeals (1850-1851), and Chief Justice of the New York State supreme court (1850-1851). Lightly toned, stained and creased. Normal cancellation cuts, which touch notations and Dix and Bronson's signatures. Flagg and Bronson's signatures touch. Show-through from docket touches notations and all signatures but Dix's. Missing left corners. Light tears in top right corner and bottom edge. Folded twice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
