JOHN A. LOGAN. Manuscript LS: "John A. Logan", 1p, 5x8. Chicago, Ill., 1885 May 26. To H.W. Higinbotham. In full: "For your kind congratulations please accept my sincere thanks." Major General Logan helped found the Grand Army of the Republic (1865) and proclaimed the first Memorial Day (May 30, 1868). A Congressman and Senator, Democrat before the Civil War and Republican afterward, he was the unsuccessful nominee for Vice President with James G. Blaine in 1884. Earlier that month, Logan had been re-elected to the U.S. Senate after an epic, 120-ballot contest in the Illinois state legislature. One of the premier volunteer generals of the Civil War, Logan distinguished himself in the Vicksburg campaign. Lightly stained at blank areas, light ink transference below signature, else fine condition.
