Manuscript Document Signed: "Jno. Withers" as Assistant Adjutant General, 1 page, 7¾x10. Richmond, Virginia, 1865 February 2. Special Orders #27 on letterhead of the [Confederate] Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, by command of the Secretary of War. In full: "XXII. Private C. C. Carroll of Company H, 58th Regiment Alabama Cavalry is detailed upon the grounds of Equity, Justice and Necessity, and will report to the Enrolling officer of Coffee County, Alabama. Jonathan M. Withers (1826-1892) graduated from West Point in 1849, and served in the US Army on the Western frontier and, from September 1860, as US Assistant Adjutant General. While stationed in San Antonio, Texas, he met and married Anita Dwyer Withers in 1857. In March 1861 Withers resigned his US Army commission to join the Confederacy, and in June was appointed Assistant Adjutant General of the Confederacy, working in close proximity to Confederate President Jefferson Davis and five successive Secretaries of War. Withers kept a diary, recording events of the war, his observations of Confederate leaders, and his family life, including the death of a young son. In 2011, this journal, edited by Jennette Green, was published as The Civil War Through the Eyes of Lt. Colonel John Withers and His Wife, Anita Dwyer Withers, and is widely available in print and Kindle editions. Normal mailing folds. Light foxing. Lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
