JOHN WESLEY TURNER
Signature of Turner, who helped to breach the walls of Fort Pulaski during the Civil War
Signature: "John W. Turner/Brig Gen NS Vol F/Bvt Maj Gen N.S.C.". John Wesley Turner (1833-1899) graduated from West Point in 1855 in artillery. He participated with his battery in the war against the Seminoles in (1857-1858). He was promoted to lieutenant in 1861 and then captain. He was put in command of a breaching battery at the Battle of Fort Pulaski in April 1862, which is notable as the first significant use of rifled cannons. These guns broke the fort's walls from over a mile away, signaling the end of masonry fortifications. He also took place in the siege of Petersburg and, in particular, the "Petersburg mine", an ill-fated attempt to breach the city's trenches with a huge, explosive-filled tunnel. He was promoted to brigadier-general of volunteers in September 1863 and Chief of Staff of the Department of North Carolina and Virginia till March 1865. Commanding an independent division of the 24th Corps, he participated in the closing battles of the war. He was brevetted a major general, resigned in 1871 and became a street commissioner and member of the Board of Public Works in St. Louis. Lightly toned, otherwise, fine condition.
