Price: $1,000.00
JOSÉ MODESTO RODRIGUEZ
The Cuban General writes a poetic observation about the end of the
country's War for Independence, proclaiming "Glory crowns the success of the
Cuban Army!"
Autograph Letter Signed: "J.M. Rodriguez" in iron gall ink.
7½x4¾. Fully Translated in Spanish:"The war
with all its horrors! The absence of loved ones! A place where happiness is in
the air! That is what I felt when I visited your house for the first time. Today
the war has ended. Glory crowns the success of the Cuban Army. In this
'Guayabal' where I have received so many kindnesses I receive the good wishes
from the Havana society. My military duties still keep me away from my loved
ones. You and your husband, after performing your patriotic duties, receive the
petting of your children and the thanks of the Cuban people! May fate, with its
unexpected misfortunes, never disturb the happiness of Mrs. Gertrudis Cabaleiro
de Bascuas!" Jose Modesto Rodrigues was a Major General in Cuba's War of
Independence (1895-1898); Guayabal was one of the small towns in the
province of Havana that had been captured by Cuban forces on January 1, 1896.
Many of the small towns in the region had sided with Spain; with some even
providing Cuban guerrilla forces to resist the revolutionaries. Uniformly
browned. Slightly soiled. Three tiny nicks at left edge. Otherwise, fine
condition.
