11¾x9½. $10 common stock certificate issued to W. L. Perham on March 7, 1892.
Incorporated in the State of New Jersey. Also signed by the Treasurer (name
illegible) and by bank official "J. Q. Adams". Docketing on verso.
Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (1828-1914) commanded the 20th Maine in its
famous defense of Little Round Top in the Battle of Gettysburg, July 2, 1863.
Chamberlain was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for this action.
At Appomattox Courthouse on April 9, 1865, Brevet Major General Chamberlain
was chosen to accept the Confederate surrender. He then ordered Union troops to
present arms to their former enemy as a mark of respect. Chamberlain was later
elected Governor of Maine (1866-1870) and served as President of
Bowdoin College. In 1914, a serious war wound received a Petersburg in 1864
finally claimed his life, making him the last Civil War veteran to die from his
war wounds. Chamberlain, a great success as a soldier, scholar and statesman,
proved a poor businessman. Like many of his financial ventures, the Florida
enterprise offered here, invested in railroads and a hotel, proved
unsuccessful. Vertical fold creases. Wear notches at edges of folds. Ink
stamps on verso - some show through. Soiled. Pencil note (unknown hand) at lower
right margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
