Signature: "M. D. Leggett", 4x2¼, affixed to a 4¼x3 sheet with ink caption. Mortimer D. Leggett (1821-1896), Superintendent of the Zanesville Public Schools and law partner of future Ohio Governor Jacob Cox, served as a volunteer in the US Army throughout the Civil War. He led troops at Fort Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth, Vicksburg, and on Sherman's march to the sea, temporarily commanding a corps, and was brevetted a major general in 1865. President Grant appointed him Commissioner of Patents in 1871, a post he held for a decade. Edges irregularly cut. Notch at bottom right corner. Unknown residue at face (not effecting signature). Otherwise, fine condition.
