NATHANIEL P. BANKS
Banks sends a letter in regards to the volumes of Perry's Japan Expedition
Autograph Letter Signed: "N P Banks", 2p, 5x8 (front and verso). Waltham, Mass., 1873 June 30. To Hon. Samuel D. Crane. In part: "There are three volumes of Perry's Japan Expedition printed. I send you the third. Possibly I may have a copy of the 2d but a large part of my own library is where I cannot lay hands upon it...How sad & sudden the death of Mr. Whiting-Death seems to set at defiance all human probabilities as well as expectations! I knew no one who had so strong hopes or so reasonable a prospect of a useful & honorable career as Mr Whiting." In 1852, MATTHEW C. PERRY was sent to Japan to negotiate a treaty (1854) which opened Japan to U.S. commerce. Republican WILLIAM WHITING (1813-1873), Solicitor of the War Department (1862-1865), had just taken his seat in Congress on March 4, 1873. He died in Boston at age 60 on June 29, 1873, the day before Banks wrote this letter. Elected to Congress in 1852 as a Democrat, in 1854 as the American Party candidate and in 1856 as a Republican, NATHANIEL P. BANKS served from 1853 to December 24, 1857, when he resigned to become Governor of Massachusetts (1858-1861). From 1855-1857, Banks was Speaker of the House. Major General during the Civil War, he returned to Congress at war's end, serving as a Republican from 1865-1873, 1875-1879 and 1889-1891. Toned. Edges lightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
