OLIVER O. HOWARD
Oliver O. Howard sends an autograph letter a year after he founded
Howard University complying with a request.
Autograph Letter Signed: "O.O. Howard/Maj. Gen./Commissioner"
as Commissioner of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen, and Abandoned Lands,
War Department, Washington City, 1868 May 20. A year
after he founded Howard University in Washington, D.C., the
General who lost his right arm at Fair Oaks and saw action at
Chancellorsville and Gettysburg, writes to Geo. W. Reed, Esq., New
York City. In full: "I take pleasure in complying with your modest
request - I wish I could satisfy all who request favors as easily." The
Freedmen's Bureau was a federal agency designed to assist black Americans in
their transition from slavery to freedom at the end of the Civil War. It was
established by Congress on March 3, 1865 and Major General O. O. Howard
was named its commissioner by President Andrew Johnson on May 12, 1865. The
Bureau provided emergency food and shelter to the dislocated by the war and was
expected to define how former slaves would provide for their own subsistence.
Howard became President of Howard University in 1869. In 1874,
Howard retired from both jobs. He later served as Superintendent of
the U.S Military Academy at West Point (1881-1882). Some words smudged (not
signature), else fine.
