Oliver O. Howard signed this letter in 1890 to ask a publisher that
had not accepted his manuscript for Providences in the Army to return his
manuscript
Manuscript letter signed "O. O. Howard" as a Major General
in the United States Army. 1 page, 6x9, on stationery of Headquarters of the
Divisionof the Atlantic.With a b/w sepia-toned 3½x4½ photo of
Howard affixed inside letter. Nov. 25, 1890. Addressed to Batchelor
Publishing Co., Tribune Building, New York City. In full: "Dear Mr.
Batchelor The 'Ms.' entitled. 'Providences in the Army' not having been accepted
on account of the suspension of your 'G.A.R.' Dept, will you have the kind-ness
to return it to me? Yours truly". Howard (1830-1909, born in Leeds,
Maine) lost his right arm at Fair Oaks during the American Civil War,
engaged at Chancellorsville and Gettysburg and commanded the Army of the
Tennessee in Sherman's march to the sea. By the end of the Civil War he was
a Brigadier-General. General Howard founded Howard University in 1867
becoming its President in 1869. He served as first Commissioner of the
Freedmans Bureau, a federal agency designed to assist Black Americans in
their transition from slavery to freedom at the end of the Civil War. In 1874,
Howard retired from both jobs. He later served as Superintendent at West
Point (1881-1882). Lightly toned and creased. Paper loss and tears on back
leaf of letter (no show-through). Photo is lightly silvered with errors in
negative reproduced in the image. Folded in quarters and unfolded. Otherwise in
fine condition.
