Typed Letter Signed: "O. O. Howard",1p, 8x10½. Headquarters Department of the East, Governor's Island, New York, 1892 September 1. To F. D. Leete, Esq, Gen. Sec., Y. M. C. A., Utica, New York. In full: "On reading your kind note I was about to write you that it was impossible for me to get away from my work here; but on reflection, I am obliged to pay $120. for a special Missionary near our Mission, besides a considerable sum towards further supporting the Mission itself. Therefore, if, on consulting with a dew welltodo people, you can raise for me $50., and expenses, for the purpose named, I will arrange to be with you some Sunday this fall or the ensuing winter. If you think this not best you need not even reply, as I am already overtaxing my strength. Very truly yours," Oliver O. Howard, the commander of the Army of the Tennessee in Sherman's march to the sea, lost his right arm at Fair Oaks and fought at Gettysburg. After the war, he directed the Freedman's Bureau, where he strongly advocated land and votes for former slaves.In 1867, he founded and served as first President of Howard University (1869-1874). He negotiated a peace agreement with Cochise's Chiricahua Apaches (1872) for President Grant. From 1881-1882, Brigadier General Howard was Superintendent at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Folds through second "O" of signature. Lightly shaded and creased. File holes at upper margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
