Typed Letter signed: “Patrick J. Ryan” in blue ink, 1p, 7x9. No place, 1958 October 14. On official U.S. Army letterhead. To “Dear Mr. Thompson”. In full:Your letter of 9 October, with inclosures [sic], is before me./ As a General Officer of the United States Army I am greatly interested in the war crime trials and am honored that you have asked me to express my opinion. I feel, however, that as a clergyman I am not qualified to trespass in this field./ Again, please be assured that I appreciate your thoughtfulness in asking me to participate in your great work./ SincerelyPatrick J. Ryan (1902-1975) was a military officer. From 1954 to 1958, he served as Chief of Chaplains of the United States Army. He was stationed in Morocco and Italy during the Second World War. Ryan served as Deputy Chief of Chaplains in the U.S. Army first from 1946 to 1948, and again from and again from 1952 to 1954 after having advanced to the rank of Brigadier General. He then was elevated to the post of Chief of Chaplains, and served in this capacity at the rank of Major General from 1954 to 1958. Throughout his military career, Ryan received many awards, a few of which include the Legion of Merit, a Bronze Star, and the Army Distinguished Service Medal.  One vertical and one horizontal crease, both very faint and centralized. Vertical crease touches the “P” and “t” of “Patrick”. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
