GOVERNOR RICHARD J. OGLESBY
Signing as Governor, he penned this letter on stationery of the Executive Office in Springfield, Illinois in 1887 regarding a speech he gave before the Republican Club of New York City and corrections he made to the account of that speech.
Autograph Letter Signed: "R.J Oglesby". 1 page, 5x8¼, on stationery of the Executive Office in Springfield, Illinois with 2 binder holes at left edge. May 22, 1887. Addressed to James S. Lehmaier. In full: "My Dear sir Your favor of the 18 inst inclosing trans-cript of my remarks Fe 12, 87 before the Republican Club of N Y City, was duly recd. It is so much better as a report of all I said than I saw net morning in your [illegible] press - and so nearly a faithful report of all I did say. I must thank you and the Club, for protecting one from the carelessness of the ordinary news paper recount of what takes place on such occasions; I found time however to day to go over it; and have corrected and amended it to agree with my recollection of what I said or ought to have said that night, leaving out 'the [illegible] and the Democratic Party' as I really have no Special fond-ness for either and do not wish to appear especially in print as doing either an in-Justice. As I suppose you do not care for the copy sent me. I have not Supposed it important to return it; Yours very respectfully". Oglesby (1824-1899) was a Republican governor of Illinois (1865-1869, 1873, 1885-1889) and U. S. Senator from Illinois (1873-1879). He fought in the Mexican-American War with the 4th Illinois Volunteers. He also fought in the Civil War, where he was commissioned a colonel commanding the 8th Illinois Volunteers and rose to major general. Oglesby was badly wounded in his chest during the Second Battle of Corinth (Oct. 4 to Oct. 4, 1862). Lightly toned, soiled and creased. Light tear at left edge. Folded once vertically and twice horizontally and unfolded. Filing holes at left edge. Otherwise, fine condition.
